Introduction
There are numerous formats for writing instructional objectives. Often
borrowed from the profession of instructional design and corporate training,
they vary in the number of components they include and the level of precision
they require. The CalStateTEACH curriculum employs a model developed by
Robert Mager. Originally developed in the 1960s, the Mager model
of instructional objectives includes three components and is appropriate
for elementary and middle school lesson plans as well as corporate training.
Rationale
Though no model for writing objectives is any better
than any other, it is important to have a structured and consistent format
that all Interns learn and use as the basis for their lesson planning.
Though your colleagues may not employ this model or your school administration
may require a different format, the CalStateTEACH lesson plan format does
require the use of the Mager model. It is straightforward, relatively
easy to master, and not overly time consuming to use. After you complete
the CalStateTEACH Program and are proficient in writing objectives using
this format, you may learn other models that are more compatible with
your personal preferences or professional setting.
